Why a Prescription Is Required?
Staying Compliant With Border Force Rules for Nicotine Pouch Imports Into Australia
A quick clarification on why a prescription is required for customers importing nicotine pouches into Australia. Under the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s Personal Importation Scheme, nicotine regardless of format—is treated as a Schedule 4 prescription‑only medicine. This means customers can legally import nicotine pouches only if they hold a valid prescription issued by an Australian‑registered medical practitioner.
Without a prescription, Australian Border Force may treat the goods as Special Forfeited Goods under section 183UA of the Customs Act 1901. In practice, that means the shipment can be seized on arrival, with no option for release or return. Requiring a prescription protects customers from that risk and ensures their order is fully compliant with Australian law.
The good news is that our script‑upload system is now integrated directly with Australian Border Force. Once we upload a customer prescription, it’s automatically linked to their shipment data, which means their package is almost guaranteed to clear without any issues.
We’ll also be able to ship via DHL, which is significantly faster than NZ Post for trans‑Tasman deliveries.
